What
is a thin client?
Most modern
networks employ "fat clients". These are normal
computers, loaded with software that connect to a server.
In this case, each computer needs a hard disk, with operating
system and applications loaded to connect to any network services.
These can be costly, and difficult to maintain for large networks.
With standards
in computing power and network speed increasing, software
per-machine is no longer mandatory. Computers can connect
remotely to a server and load an operating system and software
directly from the network. These connecting machines are called
"thin clients".

What
software does the GameDude Thin Client system run?
We deploy
the Linux operating system and utilities on all systems. The
advantages of Linux over other systems are a freedom from
license restrictions (you can connect as many clients as you
please, without paying extra for software, unlike the alternatives
available) and a regular and secure upgrade path which will
not force the user to upgrade their hardware for a simple
software upgrade. There are over 10,000 free software packages
available to Linux users which enable a great reduction in
cost of day to day tasks such as word processing, spread sheeting,
project planning, graphics and picture editing, educational
assistance, CAD and engineering tasks, and many more. See
our available software page for more information on just a
small selection of software available at no extra cost.

What
are the advantages of a Thin Client system?
The primary
advantage is a massive reduction in cost. Client systems run
100% by network, and therefor do not require high specification
machines. All software is run on the server, so old workstations
that are too slow for new software are perfect candidates
for conversion to thin clients. Additionally, all software
supplied with the thin client system is completely free of
cost. Adding 20 new machines to a network means only paying
for hardware, not wasting money on additional software. Likewise,
upgrading software is free of charge, so clients can stay
up to date with modern software at all times.
The secondary
advantage is ease of administration. All thin clients run
directly from the server. If software is upgraded on the server,
all thin clients receive the updates immediately. Additionally,
there are no hard disks in the client machines, which mean
fewer hardware breakdowns. If there is a hardware failure
on the client, there is no need to reload any operating system
or software. Just simply plug in a replacement unit and turn
it on.
Thin client
computing means a single point of administration for all applications,
utilities and users, saving administration time and money.

Who
can use a Thin Client system?
Any organisation
that has already or is considering deploying a networked computing
environment can benefit from Thin Client systems. In particular,
this represents a massive decease in cost of deployment for
educational institutions, volunteer organisations and corporate
offices. The large range of software available makes a Thin
Client system an available option for almost any group.

Can
I upgrade my existing network to Thin Client solutions to
further reduce costs?
Yes. Custom
built solutions are available. Call a GameDude representative
today to organise a free, onsite consultation. We will come
to your location and recommend the best course of action to
migrate your network with minimal disruption to existing infrastructure,
users or budget. (Available only to Brisbane City and Logan
City customers - other customers please call to arrange a
telephone consultation).

Can
I see a demonstration, and/or check my location for suitability?
Yes!
As above, contact us to arrange an onsite demonstration. We
can present to both technical and administration/financial
departments to best explain how a Thin Client solution can
best suit your needs for end users, system administrators
and your budget.
